Upwork: we plan to extend the “waiting period” to retake a skill test

Upwork community manager announced at earlier time of January 2017 that Upwork is planning to extend the “waiting period”  freelancers should wait to retake an Upwork skill test.

Introduction

Although Upwork skills tests is one of the most powerful advantages as a remote work platform. Not only because there is tests for most of the skills but also because its free of charge. Other freelance platforms like freelancer.com charges fees on skills tests .

“We have a couple of options in mind for the new “waiting period”, 90 days and 180 days. This would mean that after taking a Skill Test, if you tried retaking that same test, you’d be blocked from doing so until either 90 days or 180 days have passed.” said  , Upwork community manager

Our review

It seems that the free concept is resulting in lazy testing system. Everyone can notice that questions are not changing for long while. That was the reason Upwork set a long waiting time of 30 days before a freelancer can retake the same test.

But instead of developing the tests adding new questions, Upwork team came up with a poor idea. The brilliant idea is to extend the already long “waiting time” 3 time or 6 times longer.

Freelancers in Upwork used to retake skills tests for two reasons:

1- if they failed in a test.

2- if they wish to get a higher score.

The time extending idea might be reasonable only in the second case. Freelancers who passed the test would face no problem waiting a bit longer to enhance their score. But in the first case it is completely unfair to make freelancers wait even for 30 days. Given that some skills may only take two weeks to learn.

 

Conclusion

Extending the test retake time to 90 days instead of 30 would make no difference. The best thing Upwork can do at this point, is to increase the pool of questions. Or may be Upwork should use a third party to have a professional testing system.

1- More Hiring Managers are satisfied with the skills of freelancers than the skills of their most recent full time hires.

2- 60% of hiring managers expected that freelancing will continue to increase.

3- 88% of hiring managers have openings on their teams.

4- only 10% of hiring managers believe in physical presence in office is important to a new hire’s success.

5- 35% of departments have freelancers that conduct a significant portion of their work from a remote location.

7- 77% of managers use more than one resource when finding freelancers to hire.

8- 48% of managers used online resources to find freelancers in the past year.

9- 79% of companies are more likely to hire the most qualified freelancer than the least expensive.

10- 4 times as many hiring managers plan to use more freelancers in the coming year than plan to use fewer.

Upwork came up with a very Controversial way to detect “fraudulent profiles“, since the end of 2016.

“Unfortunately, sometimes we see fraudulent profiles, and to prevent this, on occasion we need to verify the information a freelancer has included in their profile. With this new program, some freelancers may be asked to join a brief video chat with an Upwork representative. During this video call, which should take less than three minutes, our representative will ask a few questions to confirm some of the information entered by the freelancer on his/her profile.” said the community manager Garnor M .

“I just got the same email. And I am still waiting to chat with someone. This isn’t making me feel very confident”, Said Amy T, Negative opinion 

“Vlad (or other moderator), are you able to explain why this process is being rolled out in a way that cripples freelancer’s ability to submit proposals without warning.  rather than in an orderly manner that would allow time to schedule the verification before the ability to submit proposals was frozen?” said Tiffany S, Negative opinion 

“As asked before: What does this actually entail? So I have to go out and buy a webcam now?” said Kim F,  Negative opinion 

“What video verification would do (assuming someone doesn’t use a stand-in) would verify someone’s gender, age, race, and physical capabilities. All of which are protected categories here in California (where Upwork is also based). I don’t have or want a profile photo: my work speaks for itself. Requiring people to in effect verify their gender, race, age, and physical capabilities is huge invitation to discrimination. Both by Upwork and by clients. Further, the idea of picking people out at random for punishment is also how cults and dictatorial regimes operate.” said Chris K, Negative opinion

 

Summary

Dislike, Angry, Upset, Imoticon

Although Upwork officials said that this program is a part of their ongoing efforts to protect all users. It is too difficult for any reasonable adult to understand how can a three minutes video chat verifies his skills as a freelancer. While the official documentation provided in the profile can’t.

We think that this program is not doing what it supposed to do. On the other hand it is making freelancers frustrated. As seen in the sample opinions collected from Upwork community.  Upwork forced some freelancers to buy cameras making them so upset. This makes Upwork verification system is the worst among other freelance platforms. It’s actually leading many freelancers to move to another platforms such as Fiverr, and freelancer.com.

Upwork: Skrill (No Longer Available) Starting April 24, 2017

Upwork removes skrill

A few days ago Upwork announced that they are not going to allow freelancers working for them to transfer their earnings via Skrill (Formerly known as Moneybookers) .

Skrill is considered a one of the most famous e-commerce business working on the internet allowing payments and money transfers to be made through the Internet. It used to be one of the favorite money transfer options for freelancers all over the world due to its relatively low costs international money transfer.

 

Skrill will no longer be available as of April 24, 2017. Read the announcement here.

“After a thorough review, we’ve determined that Skrill’s product offering and customer support to our community do not consistently meet the standards we require of our payment partners.” Said Lena E, The community manager of Upwork earlier this month.

“For example, Skrill’s sudden decision to remove their debit card service from certain countries have left many freelancers without adequate support.” she proceeded.

Upwork support team sent notification to all clients who used to us Skrill as a payment method to let them know about this serious decision and allowing them to set a new payment method until April 24, 2017.
